hello there sons and daughters,
this weeks assignment handed down to us by our fearless leader was to go out and find a sample of wild helvetica in its natural environment. which happens to be everywhere as it seems.
i found a few that were really quite effective, but this week I decided to follow an example of one that didn't work as well as it could have.
Here we have Sonys Playstation Move Sports Champions Bundle. Exciting new technology in a brand new setup just screaming for you to take it home and set up this astounding new piece of equipment.
I'm sure its a blast to use, but absolutely nothing on this package oozes excitement. The use of Helvetica for this text is just flat and rather lifeless. This could easily be packaging for some new antacid packaging. It's just that interesting.
We are learning that typography has to be expressive and engaging, now I'm not expecting to see something like a Trix cereal box, but at least Sony could have found a way to put some more oomph behind this....Tell me what you think.
Hahah, yeah. Honestly, I wouldn't really wanna buy that PS3 thing. I am sure it's fun though... However, this doesn't express excitment at all... I am yawning just looking the rather horrid packaging and helvetica. x_x
ReplyDeleteThey should just suck it up and forget streamline and safe and take a lesson from Alienware computers. :O
I totally agree with you; this is probably fun no doubt, but the text is not making me want to buy this let alone read what the thing is!
ReplyDeleteHelvetica. It is everywhere. :]
ReplyDeleteI think this package design is so boring because everything is so similar in size and everything is just sort of put in its own little space. Not to mention to colours. A tone of white and some soft blue. Uh, that doesn't say Playstation to me.
ReplyDeleteI don't think using Helvetica for the packaging was a bad idea, it just need to be bumped up more. Use some Helvetica bold and add more emphasis, maybe.
Ah what am I saying, who wants a playstation move anyways when you could get an xbox with kinect (orwhateverit'scalled) xD

ReplyDeleteI very much agree with Chris, Helvetica makes this looks like some cheap, government issued game console. It takes away from the brilliant piece of technology that sits just beyond its lifeless cardboard shroud.
ReplyDeleteVerrrry boring, nothing about this stands out....just proves that helvetica is not ALWAYS suitable.
